100-Mile Community Meal

Event: Sunday, October 10 from 12:30–2:30pm

Did you know that positive initiatives contributing to local solutions for climate change are happening right now? This is an opportunity to find out about—Sustainable Health Care, Slow Food, Our Time Bank, solar cookers, Transition Mar Vista/Venice—AND to let others know about what you’re up to!

Share a potluck community feast made from luscious local ingredients. Gather at The Learning Garden at Venice High School. Relax on the patio under the huge pepper tree. All are welcome.

This is a 10/10/10 event inspired by the work of 350.org

What is a 100-Mile Meal?
Not only does local produce taste better, it’s better for you! And it saves wear-and-tear on the planet. This long-distance, large-scale transportation of food consumes large quantities of fossil fuels. Did you know that the average American meal travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your table? A 100-Mile Meal gives us the opportunity to stop and ask where each ingredient that we take for granted comes from. We may then be inclined to make different choices. (As a guide for this event, 100 miles from Los Angeles takes us as far as Bakersfield in the north and almost gets us to San Diego.) Is there anything growing in your own garden you could add in?

What to Bring
  • potluck item to serve 8 (main dish, side dish, vegetable, salad, bread, drink, or dessert)
  • comprehensive label detailing the source of your ingredients
  • a copy of your recipe to share
  • your own dishes and cutlery (encouraged)
  • reusable water bottle
  • sunscreen
Getting There
The Learning Garden at Venice High School is located at Venice Blvd and Walgrove Ave. Enter the garden from Walgrove, through the chain link gate located between Venice and Zanja.

Please consider walking, biking, taking the 33 or 733 Metro bus on Venice Boulevard, or carpooling to the event. (If you do bring a car, there is street parking on Walgrove and Zanja).

Think global. Buy local.
